What is Advaita Vedanta?

Advaita Vedanta, which translates to “Non-Duality”, or “not two”, is a practice that leads to direct realisation of the True Self (“Atman”). Through this realisation, a being becomes aware that they are connected and intrinsically one with all that exists, rather than a separate person living apart from reality, in suffering.

In Advaita Vedanta,  the interest is to find liberation in this lifetime. Rather than assuming freedom in the afterlife, one is able to live as a free being. Everybody can learn and attain this understanding, it is every human’s possibility and opportunity.

In fact, the so-called ‘path’ of Advaita Vedanta is often referred to as the ‘pathless path’, because it points to the direct realisation that everything we seek, we already are. In other words, there is nothing to attain – the realisation of the True Self is available to everyone right now, in this very moment.

Advaita not only shows that liberation is available in this present moment, it also exposes the fact that liberation is only available in this moment.

As soon as we start to speak about the past or the future, we enter the realm of illusion, where sight of reality is lost.

In Satsang, participants are pointed directly to see what is True, to differentiate between mental activity and natural presence in this moment.

The School of Advaita Vedanta is therefore precise and one-pointed – this moment, and this moment only, exists. Remaining present in it is liberation and the end of suffering, or what is commonly referred to as ‘Enlightenment’.
